The South Houston Mighty Trojan band participated in this year’s annual UIL Region XIX Band solo and Ensemble contest on Feb. 25. The band members were required to play either a solo or an ensemble of a class one or two, class one being the most difficult piece. Out of the total 80 students that participated, the band came home with 64 individual medals. From those students, 40 of them qualified for the Texas State Solo and Ensemble contest hosted at The university of Texas at Austin in May.

“I played to the best of my ability and it helped me build up confidence for when I go to state,” Sophomore, Christian Saldivar said. Saldivar qualified with his quintet playing “Die Bankelsangerlieder”, by Daniel Speer.

In order to qualify for state with an ensemble the group must be able to get the outstanding rating of a one with an ensemble of a class one piece. For a solo, the student must play a class one by memory and get a rating of a one to move on to state. The band members fully prepared themselves for the first round of the competition and will get back to perfecting their pieces for Austin.
